Signs You May Have Mold
Mold is often hidden inside walls, under flooring, or in crawl spaces long before it becomes visible. By the time you see or smell mold, the colony has typically been growing for weeks or months. Common warning signs include:
- Persistent musty or earthy odor, especially in basements or bathrooms
- Visible discoloration (black, green, gray, or white patches) on walls, ceilings, or floors
- Allergy or respiratory symptoms that improve when you leave the building
- Peeling paint or bubbling wallpaper indicating moisture behind walls
- Water stains or dark spots on drywall, particularly after past water damage
- Warped or buckled flooring with no obvious cause
Health Risks of Mold Exposure
Mold produces mycotoxins and airborne spores that can cause a range of health effects, from mild allergic reactions to serious respiratory illness. Symptoms of mold exposure include nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, skin irritation, and eye irritation.
People with asthma, compromised immune systems, or existing respiratory conditions are at significantly higher risk. Children and the elderly are also more vulnerable. Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly called black mold) produces particularly potent mycotoxins and requires professional handling.
Do not attempt to clean visible mold with bleach or household cleaners. These products kill surface mold but do not address root systems that penetrate porous materials, and aggressive scrubbing releases spores into the air, spreading contamination.
Our Remediation Process
- Inspection and testing: We conduct a full visual inspection and, where appropriate, air quality sampling to identify mold species and spore counts.
- Containment: Affected areas are sealed with polyethylene sheeting and negative air pressure equipment to prevent spores from spreading to unaffected spaces.
- HEPA filtration: Air scrubbers with HEPA filters run continuously throughout the remediation to capture airborne spores.
- Material removal: Mold-saturated porous materials (drywall, insulation, carpet, wood) are safely removed, bagged, and disposed of per EPA guidelines.
- Treatment: Remaining structural materials are treated with EPA-registered antimicrobial solutions to eliminate residual mold and prevent regrowth.
- Post-remediation verification: Air quality testing confirms spore counts have returned to safe levels before containment is removed.
Why You Cannot DIY Mold Remediation
DIY mold removal is not only ineffective for significant mold growth, it can make the problem considerably worse. Without proper containment, remediation activities spread spores throughout the building. Without post-remediation testing, you have no way to confirm that the problem has been fully resolved.
Additionally, insurance companies often require documentation from a certified remediator for mold-related claims. An improperly documented or incomplete remediation can result in claim denial.
Air Quality Testing
We offer both pre- and post-remediation air quality testing using spore trap cassette sampling analyzed by an accredited laboratory. Testing provides a detailed breakdown of mold species present and spore counts per cubic meter of air, giving you objective evidence that your home is safe after remediation is complete.
